Operational difference

Shopify starts from products, checkout, orders, inventory, channels, and fulfillment. Wix starts from a flexible business website and adds commerce, bookings, content, forms, and related tools. That difference changes the workbench the owner sees every day. Shopify is the stronger first trial when exceptions in the product-to-refund workflow drive the decision. Wix is the stronger first trial when the store supports a wider service or editorial website and the catalog remains controlled.

Do not compare polished demo sites. Build the same representative product, policy, content page, promotion, shipping rule, and refund in both trials. Use the longest product name, the most difficult variant structure, and the smallest mobile screen the business expects customers to use. Record every required upgrade, app, manual workaround, permission gap, and support question.

Run one controlled scenario in both platforms

Create a four-item catalog: a simple physical product, a variant-heavy product, an unavailable product, and any service or digital item that matters to the business. Import the source data, edit it in bulk, publish a mobile collection, place a successful and failed order, apply a discount, calculate shipping, issue a partial refund, and export the resulting records. The winner is the platform that produces the clearer evidence package with the lower sustainable workload, not the one with the faster homepage setup.

Five-product service brand

Give Wix the first trial when appointments, forms, content, and direct visual editing matter as much as product operations. Reject it if required product types or exports cannot be preserved.

Growing physical catalog

Give Shopify the first trial when variants, inventory, fulfillment, channels, and a specialist app ecosystem drive daily work. Reject an app stack whose ownership or recurring cost is unclear.

Mixed operation

Score both against the same owner hours, catalog exceptions, support route, and twelve-month cost. A mixed business should not let either the store or the content site hide the harder workflow.

Compare total operating cost

Use the same annual revenue, payment methods, staff count, content workload, theme requirements, paid extensions, migration scope, and support assumptions. Separate essential commerce dependencies from optional marketing additions. Price the regular renewal period rather than an introductory headline. Include the cost of rebuilding a workflow if an app, integration, or plan feature changes.

For Shopify, list every app needed to complete the representative sale and identify where its data is stored. For Wix, count the time required to maintain catalog and site content together and verify which capabilities belong to the selected plan. Run conservative, expected, and growth cases in the launch-cost estimator so a low first-month bill does not decide a multi-year operating model.

Test portability before choosing

Shopify documents separate product and order exports. Wix documents CSV export for physical products and notes boundaries for unsupported digital-product export and file size. Download the actual trial exports and compare identifiers, variants, images, order status, payment references, customer consent, and historical records. Preserve original media and a URL map separately. An available CSV is useful only when another person can explain what it contains, what it omits, and how the business would reconstruct the missing parts.
